What the pin below the slots tells you

We cut the plate so the cord leaves the bottom edge and the printing on the face reads level. On an outlet wired this way the flat slots take the blades first, and the round hole stays clear underneath. Nothing about the cover changes how the outlet works; it only sits over the face of it.

What the pin above the slots tells you

The plate is turned so the cord still leaves the bottom edge and the face still reads level, while the opening for the round hole moves to the top. It is the same part, cut the other way up. Worth checking twice, because a plate for the usual layout will physically plug in and then sit wrong.
